EPFO’s New Claim Settlement Rules Effective April 2025

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made it official that it will radically transform its claim settlement process starting on the 1st of April, 2025. These changes are meant to speed-up withdrawals, eliminate a lot of paperwork and also create a good experience for the over 270 million (27 crore) EPF account holders. The new regulations were made public during the CBT’s 238th meeting chaired by Union Labour Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.

100% PF Withdrawal Now Made Easier

The EPFO previously had a policy that allowed members to make partial withdrawals under 13 major categories like illness, marriage, or house purchase. Now these categories are combined under the three main headings— medical, retirement, and unemployment. In certain cases, a member can now withdraw the whole 100% of his/her PF account balance, which consists of the contributions of both the employer and the employee.

Automatic Settlement Limit Changed to ₹1 Lakh

In order to facilitate the processing further, EPFO has made the automatic limit for settlement of claims on advances up to ₹1 lakh. This implies that claims up to ₹1 lakh related to housing, education, marriage, or medical emergencies will be settled automatically without human intervention. Presently, 60% of advance claims are settled in automated mode, and this figure is projected to go up.

Online Claim System and Life Certificate

The EPFO has rolled out a single digital claims platform through which members can:

  • Make their claims online
  • Check the status in real time
  • Get faster disbursals

Moreover, pensioners can now submit their Digital Life Certificate from the comfort of their homes using Aadhaar-based facial recognition due to a tie-up with the India Post Payment Bank.
