Good News 8th Pay Commission Approved: Big Relief for Government Employees and Pensioners

The Union Cabinet has given a green signal to the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Pay Commission, which means good news for more than 50 lakh central government employees and the entire 69 lakh pensioners group. The commission is going to evaluate salaries, pensions, and service conditions, and by its suggestions, the new system will be in place from January 1, 2026.

What Is the 8th Pay Commission?

The government sets up Pay Commissions every decade to adjust the pay structure of public sector employees. The commission will be headed by a retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, who would be assisted by a part-time member and a member-secretary. It is already a herculean task for the commission to submit its final recommendations within 18 months of its formation, though the interim reports are allowed.

What Will It Cover?

The commission will cover:

  • Slashing and increasing of salaries and pensions
  • All other allowances and service conditions
  • The government’s economic impact
  • The needs for development and fiscal discipline
  • Sustainability of pensions for non-contributory schemes

In addition, the commission will also consider the financial impact on state governments since they usually follow the central pay hikes.
